Client: Nicole Sumerlyn
Tasks: Publicity, Grant Writing, Personal Branding
NovaCurrent PR started working with Canadian country artist Nicole Sumerlyn in September of 2017. Our first project together was an extensive re-branding of her website and a new set of branding directives to assist in her brand direction and social media focus.
Nicole Sumerlyn’s new website was launched in the spring of 2018, providing her with a robust online presence. In addition, we also created a personal branding summary for Nicole with brand descriptors and target audience analysis to enhance her brand focus, along with a social media guide to assist in following through on her new brand directives.
In the spring of 2020, Canadian country artist Nicole Sumerlyn hired NovaCurrent Public Relations to prepare her application to the FACTOR Artist Development program.
We worked with Nicole on all aspects of the application – including building supplementary materials, and developing her artist development strategy.
Nicole Sumerlyn was approved for funding in the FACTOR Artist Development program in the fall of 2020. The funding was used in part towards the distribution, promotion, and music video for her 2021 single, “Over A Drink”.
Following the successful funding from FACTOR, we teamed up with Nicole again on a publicity campaign for “Over A Drink” – her first single release in adulthood. Since the song was co-written in Nashville, our goal was to secure coverage in Music City while also introducing Nicole to a broader online audience.
The music publicity campaign for “Over A Drink” resulted in 20 media placements for Nicole Sumerlyn. Highlights included a television performance on Today in Nashville, an interview with Nashville-based Music City Music Magazine, as well as additional interviews and features from the likes of Canadian Beats, Bong Mines Entertainment, Digital Tour Bus, Aesthetic Magazine, Medium, Rudy Blair, and In the Country with Dave Woods In addition to this coverage, we also secured placement for “Over A Drink” in rotation on the Canadian country reporting radio station Country 107.1 in Abbotsofrd, and earned 35 additional placements on independent Spotify playlists.

Our next project with Nicole Sumerlyn was more publicity for the summer release of “Floatin'”, her second single of 2021. This time, we aimed for media coverage from those who would be the right fit for the relaxed mood of the song and would also serve as outlets that were new to Nicole.
The music publicity campaign for “Floatin'” resulted in over 20 media placements for Nicole Sumerlyn. Among the highlights were a television performance on The Hampton Roads Show, interviews with Tinnitist, The Partae, This is Codi, Country with Celine, and Make Studios, as well as features from B-Sides and Badlands, To the Point Music, and Black is the New AP Style. The single was also placed on 25 Spotify third-party playlists.

In 2022, we continued our work with Nicole by managing the publicity campaign for her single release, “Hostage”. Given that this was her first official release to Canadian country radio, our intention was to use her previous media exposure as momentum for higher-profile outreach that would in turn support the single and its music video.
The “Hostage” publicity campaign resulted in over 10 media placements for Nicole, including television interviews on Global News Morning Kingston and CTV Morning Live Regina, as well as a television performance on The Hampton Roads Show. Additionally, we secured a return performance for Nicole on SCENES, along with interviews and features from the likes of Front Porch Music, Canadian Beats, VENTS Magazine, Live in Limbo, BuzzMusic, and The Women of Country.
